Introduction

Lymphedema is a diffused edema of a specific region of the body and whose etiology is a dysfunction of the superficial lymphatic system and, in some rare cases, also affects the deep lymphatic system. As a result of lymphatic system overload, glossary:protein|proteins]] and liquids accumulate within subcutaneous cellular tissues causing them to increase in size. Weight is also incre…

What are the various “parts” of the lymphatic system and what exactly do they do?

The lymphatic system is not really a separate system of the body. It is considered part of the circulatory system since it consists of lymph, a moving fluid that comes from the blood and returns to the blood by way of the lymphatic vessels. Lymph carries some nutrients around the body, especially fat. It also distributes germ-fighting white cells. Lymph resembles plasma, but is more diluted and contains only abo…

ABSTRACT

Background and Purpose. Women who undergo surgery for breast cancer are at high risk for developing lymphedema. The conventional treatment for lymphedema is complex lymphatic therapy (CLT). Complex lymphatic therapy has good outcomes during the intensive phase of lymphedema treatment, but it is often difficult to preserve these results through the maintenance phase. The purpose of this case report is to…

Please understand, these artificial nodes were used in the creation of a new immune response system in immunodeficient mice. The nodes did not transport lymph fluid and thus at the present time would not work for the treatment of lymphedema. But, perhaps, this cutting edge research is a strong first step towards that possibility.

Because of the condition of the skin and the swelling, it is fairly common for people with lymphedema to experience blisters. It is important to treat these correctly as they can be an opening for bacteria.

A blister is a lfuid filled “bump” or “bubble on the skin. It is an inflammatory response to skin trauma, injury or damage and is your body’s way of helping protect the injured area and to help it heal.

An essential part of the treatment and management of lymphedema are compression bandages.
For me, it is an automatic part of my daily ritual that after my shower, applying skin lotion comes compression wrapping of my legs.

This page gives complete information on what compression bandages are, what they do, how to wrap your limb and the care of your bandages.

There are three broad groups of compression appliances we use in the treatment and mangement of lymphedema.

First are the compression bandages that are generally used during the treatment phase and that we wrap our legs or arms with each day.

Secondly are the compression garments referred to generally as compression stockings. After our treatments are complete and the limb is reduced as far as we can get it through MLD or CDT the next step is in wearing these compression stockings.

Put a crowd of lymphedema patients, therapists and doctors together and nothing will start a heated debate like the topic of using pneumatic compression pumps for the treatment of lymphedema.

Compression pumps were at one time a standard of treatment for lymphedema. These older types referred to simply as compression pumps consist of an inflatable garment for the arm, leg, or foot and an electrical pneumatic pump that fills the garment with compressed air. The garment is intermittently inflated…

Discussion

Many of us with lymphedema report constant problems with corns and calluses. These growths, which is a thickening of the skin is a response to pressure. For us it is not only the normal pressure of a shoe, but pressure caused by the swelling and in our wearing shoes that often do not fit properly.

Edema or Lymphedema

Not all swelling is lymphedema, some is edema caused by an underlying medical condition. This section includes articles that will help explain the difference.

If you have unexplained swelling, it is crucial for you to work with your doctor to find the underlying cause. Don't assume it is lymphedema. You must get treatment for the condition that is causing your edema.

Daily compression wrapping is a critical part of the treatment and management of lymphedema. Many lymphedema patients, however, find it incredibly difficult to properly wrap their legs consistently. This often leads to patient noncompliance and eventually causes their lymphedema to worsen with increased complications, swelling, draining wounds, more infections and substantially increased pain.

Most people who have leg lymphedema also will have foot involvment. Thus, taking care of our feet becomes even more critical for lymphedema patients.

Feet that have damaged skin, cuts, scrapes or any open areas become entry foci for bacterial infections associated with lymphedemainfections. Feet with unhealthy skin can become an open door for foot fungal infections. Both can cause further complications and worsening of our lymphedema.

1. Keep the entire at-risk quadrant spotlessly
clean. Natural gentle cleansing products are
strongly encouraged. Dry skin in a gentle but
thorough non-vigorous fashion. Pay special
attention to creases in the skin and the areas
between toes and fingers.

There are a few “rules of thumb” I use.

First, do they know enough to recognize lymphedema?

Secondly, do they know enough to refer you to a certified lymphedema therapist for the correct treatment?

One of the complications of long term lymphedema is a condition referred to as hyperkeratosis and is usually found in leg lymphedema versus arm lymphedema. Hyperkeratosis is a condition where in the body produces excessive protein called Keratin, resulting in the thickening of the skin. The hyperkeratosis associated with lymphedema also is a thickening of the skin layers due to increased fibrosis. and is more common in late stage two or stage three.

Very generally, lymphedema describes the condition of (or the physical symptoms of) swelling of a leg, arm, or even abdomen, resulting from a malfunction of (or damage to) the lymph system. The lymph system is responsible for the flow of fluids that carry both the food and waste for cells. Hence, lymph-edema. These are, of course, dramatically oversimplified and technically inaccurate statements. However, this should be a fair start if you do not know what lymphedema is.

Many people who survive cancer will suffer from a serious side effect
of treatment known as lymphedema, and they may not even know about
it.

The lymphatic system comprises a very fine network of vessels and
filtering nodes that circulate lymph (the fluid that bathes cells with
nutrients and helps clear away waste and infection) throughout the
body. Lymphedema results when part of this system is interrupted -
when lymph nodes …

Introduction

For young women with lymphedema, especially primary lymphedema, the thought of having babies and what might happen is a scary topic with many many questions.

They want to know if their lymphedema will worsen as a result of pregnancy; if they have hereditary lymphedema, can they have a baby and can they pass it on to their children.

Having posted an indepth page of information on lymphedema and rheumatoid arthritis, I thought it might be helpful to also include a page on psoriatic arthritis, which has also been demonstrated to be involved in lymphedema.

To understand the possible relationship between arthritis, or any inflammatory disease and lymphedema, I want to share something Tom Kincheloe, a lymphedema therapist and a member of our online support group Advocates for Lymphedema shared:

This page was in a way, quite easy for me to write as from the day I was born in 1952, I had evident leg lymphedema. I have never known a day without it and because correct treatment wasn’t known in my childhood, I have lived long enough to experience to worse complications of untreated or improperly treated lymphedema.

Though incredibly rare, one of the most “known of” lymphedema conditions is lymphedema ptosis. This particular syndrome is easily recognizable by the “droopy” eyelids.

The entity was briefly reported by Falls and Kertesz in 1964 in a father and son. The association of ptosis with lymphedema was documented by Bloom in 1941 in a 5 generation family.

Introduction

When I was asked to do an article about my life with lymphedema, I thought that would be easy. I have found the opposite to be true. It’s hard to put into words a story of 52 years of living with a condition like this.

My life is an example of what can happen when lymphedema is incorrectly treated, or not treated at all. But it is also, I hope, an example of what you can do and what a full and exciting life you can have, even with lymphedema.

A familial condition similar to both Turner Syndrome. It is different however, in that here is no chromosomal defect as is involved with Turner and unlike Noonan's, this condition can affect both sexes.

As with Turner Syndrome and Klinefelter Syndrome, lymphedema is listed as a complication. Generally, it is transient, but if it remains constant or progresses, treatment and care of the patient will need to include management of the lymphedema.

Many lymphedema patients express complaints of a loss of sensation, muscle weakness and or a sense of tingling and burning in an effected limb. This complication is actually a condition called peripheral neuropathy

It is important to note that while periperal neuropathy in some causes a loss of sensation in others, due to nerve damage, it can cause a significant increase in debilitating pain.

Reflexology is an alternative treatment therapy which deals with the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body. Stimulating these reflexes properly can, according to practitioners help many health problems in a natural way, a type of preventative maintenance.

The short stretch bandage is a wrap used in the treatment of lymphedema. It is called “short strech” because of it rating on elasticity. These bandages are rated at approximately 70%, which means they can stretch up to 70% beyond their actual non extended length. Because of this, they are able to provide continual compression on the lymphedema limb. They work inconjunction with your muscles to help not only prevent additional swelling, but to help lymph flow.

A procedure used more and more in the detection of cancers and in the biopsy of suspect areas is the needle aspiration. More commonly, patients refer to it as simply a “small needle biopsy.”

In the procedure, a small amount of tissue is removed and it can be used to make a diagnosis of a number of medical problems including cancer, infections or inflammation or infection. Any lump, bump, growth or suspect area can have a small needle biopsy done.

There are many, rare syndromes associated with lymphatic dysplasia where in the patient will present with lymphedema. Therefore it is useful to include them in the website.

I especially want to express my deep appreciation to Dr. Bruno Chikly for his very kind permission in allowing us to use and reproduce information from his book Silent Waves Theory And Practice Of Lymph Drainage Therapy.
When we usually think of lymphedema, it is in terms of a permanent condition.

However, there is a form of lymphedema that is temporary or “transient.”

The following excerpt from the National Cancer Institute gives an excellent description and comparison between the two.

Debulking Surgery for Lymphedema

One of the experimental procedures I had as a young person with lymphedema was called the Thompson's Procedure.

This was a debulking surgery that was actually a combination surgery using techniques of both the Charles and the Miller surgeries. The limb is first debulked, the a flap of skin was sewn into the muscle of the limb with anticipation that flap would act as a “wick” drawing the fluids into the deeper lymphatics.

The lymphatic system varies a little in everyone: the number and size of lymph nodes, the number, exact location and specific direction of lymph vessels, and so on. When these variations become more extreme, a person can be at risk for lymphedema. Some of the problems found in primary lymphedema (whether hereditary or not) are as follows:

Two of the most commonly asked questions regarding doctors and lymphedema is:

	* 1.)	What type of doctor diagnosis lymphedema?

	* 2.)	What type of doctor treats lymphedema?

Unfortunately, because lymphology or lymphatic science is not a recognized or distinct medical subspecialty, there is no particular type of doctor who would be automatically good to go for for either treatment or diagnosis.
