KNEE REPLACEMENT

Postby Arizona Mo » Wed Sep 23, 2009 4:06 am

I have lymphedema in both legs from the knee down. Both legs are very swollen and covered with blisters - but no drainage. My problem is that my knees are so bad I am in a wheelchair and have a lot of pain. I have found a couple of doctors that have reluctantly agreed to doing a knee replacement but are of course worried of infection. I would be interested to hear if anyone else has had a knee replacement under these conditions. The doctors have warned me that there is a chance of infection which could lead to amputation - but in the meantime I am in so much pain and can't walk anyways. I am 58 years old and my life sucks. If you have any information, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Hey Arizona :)

Super welcome to our family - btw - one of my very favorite people Cassie )moderator) is also from Arizona.

More and more lmphedema patients are having to have significant joint replacement and we do have pages on the knee, hip, shoulder and I am working on one for the ankle as well.

Lymphedema Total Knee Replacment

Although infections do remain the most noatable possible complication, report have been so good that even the #1 European doctor in lymphedema feels safe in recommending the procedure if necesssary.

Take a look at it and jot down any questions you may have and I'll get back to you.

All the best!

I am new to this site and am comforted to know that I'm with other folks who understand my situtation. I have Primary Lymphedema in both of my legs........yesterday I was told by an Orthopedic Specialist that I need to have a total knee replacement of my left knee....the thought of the surgery scrares the heck out of me. I'm now trying (without much luck) to find a surgeon who has actually replaced the knee of someone with Lymphedema. Any feedback from anyone who's been in my situtation would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I am new to I thought you would like to hear my story. I had my right knee replaced about 6 years ago which went well I had no problems. so when I needed my left knee replaced in 2008 I went ahead and had It replaced. After the opp I had no problems and returned home after about 10 days. That is when the problems started I had liquid running down my leg and poolling no the floor the district nurse said all was well I took her advise.
After 2 weeks thinngs were getting worse and I returned to hospital and was kept in. My consaultant did not know what the problem was me took me back into the opp theatre and opened iup to clean it out this was done a few times .After 8 opps and 6 months in hospital he told me me had found out that I had lymphedema. He told me the only thing that would help me was to remove the knee replacement . Thy removed my knee and sent me home with no knee and I had to wait 9 months to have a new knee put in. After spending most of 2009 in hospital I was sent home again.
Now I have grade 2 lymphedema and have have now found out that thy did not replace my kneecap and need another opp to sort it out as it is sitting to the side of my knee. My consaultant said he is scared to open me up as the lylphedema will get worse.
