Leg tips

First, let me say that Lymphedema really stinks. I've had it for over 2 years and it has changed my life completely...... and not in a good way. I went from a guy that exercised and played sports every day to someone that struggles to exercise due to the pain. I have it in my foot and ankle and it ends there. I just went through a session with the laser and it didn't work at all. It's very depressing and it doesn't help that I have a desk job so I sit around for most of the day even though I do get up as often as possible. Does anyone have any tips for exercising with it in the foot and ankle? I like to play a lot of running sports and the two don't mix well.

On another note, I've gotten good ideas from this site (great site) and they seem to help for the most part. Compression seems to keep it from getting worse but I'd really like to get the size down some more. God bless you all for sticking with it as I'm ready to throw in the towel after 2 years. The single worst part is doctors look at me and seem more confused than myself.

Are you massaging? I wear a stocking daily but if I don't massage fluid builds up.

I do massage and use a pump as well. My insurance paid for a pump. It works well. I'm not sure if I"m actually doing the massage correctly though. It doesn't seem to work as well as the pump.

I am going to ramble a bit here!! Pumps are rarely used here...the only facility that I know of is at the other end of the country! Self massage is it...I check in to the lymph massage specialist every two weeks to keep me honest as the massage does get boring and I know I'd lapse. She tells me that if you don't start at the neck and 'waken' the lymph system through the body before doing the serious leg stuff you are wasting your time. Envy you the pump...the thought of sitting reading while a pump does the work really appeals! 'Waking the lymph system' is the easy 10 minute bit - the leg takes the time.
Any water near you? I find that swimming helps a lot and you get the exercise as well.

Thanks, Cleo. I only have Lymphedema in my foot. I've read where the pump can have some negative effects but I had a long talk with my doctor at the Univ of Pitt about the pump. To date I haven't had any issues and I've been using it for a while. It provides me with the most relief. I don't think I'm doing the self massage properly. However; I found a certified therapist within a decent distance from my home. She's going to teach me the proper techniques. I'm glad I found her.
