We are not medical professionals. We are people sharing lifetimes of experience with this condition. Information contained on this website is not meant to replace treatment and consultation from doctors and therapists. The medical community is very important to us in overcoming lymphedema. We strongly urge you to involve the medical community in your personal treatment program.

Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Lymphedema Care

Not only do we need to involve the medical community in our personal treatment of lymphedema, but I have found it is actually best to take a "team" approach in our care.

The team would include:

1.) Your lymphedema therapist.

2.) Primary care physcian (required in todays managed care).

3.) Infectious disease doctor. For those of us with recurring bouts of cellulitis, this can be critical. I can't say enough good about mine; he has literally kept me alive these past couple years.

4.) Wound specialist. If you have long standing, spreading wounds, you need to be under the care of a wound specialist. You can't treat these wounds normally or ignore them without catastrophic results.

Don't be afraid of speaking with your primary care physician regarding infections and/or wounds.
